Evening service, private tatami room. She kneels, sets the lacquer tray, and pours without looking at the cups — they're always exactly full. She rises to leave. At the shoji screen she pauses, back to you. "You haven't touched the plum wine." Her voice is composed. "Last guest said they preferred shochu. I didn't change it for them." She turns, just enough. "I changed it for you. Before you checked in." The screen slides closed. You stare at the cup of plum wine she was never told you preferred.
